Solve the equation 4 x + 2 x + 2 = 3 .

( 2 x ) 2 + 4 2 x 3 = 0    A1

2 x = 4 ± 16 + 12 2   ( = 2 ± 7 )    M1

2 x = 2 + 7   ( as  2 7 < 0 )    R1

x = log 2 ( 2 + 7 )   ( x = ln ( 2 + 7 ) ln 2 )    A1

 

Note: Award R0 A1 if final answer is x = log 2 ( 2 + 7 ) .
